BREAKING: President Obama Rejects Keystone XL Pipeline

This is what we’ve been fighting for. Moments ago, the Obama Administration announced they are rejecting the Keystone XL pipeline.

When Big Oil threatened “huge political consequences”, our movement countered with a message of hope. Today, President Obama stood up for the generation that put him in office.

Today is a victory for the thousands of people across the country who summoned every ounce of courage and creativity they could muster, and resoundingly declared that our future will not be sold to the highest bidder.

Today is a big step for the planet, and it’s an even bigger step for our movement.

Post this photo to Facebook, and more importantly post it on the wall of someone who inspired you to join the movement for clean energy and the campaign against Keystone XL.

VIDEO: How Midwest Power Shift Helped Stop Keystone XL

How did we convince the President to delay of the Keystone XL pipeline? Pure people power. Reflecting back on this huge win I'm reminded of events like Midwest Power Shift in Cleveland, Ohio that tipped the balace on Obama's political calculus. This video highlights some of the most thrilling moments from that action.

Something to be thankful for

There are many things to be thankful for this time of year, but above all we are thankful for you, and the leadership you have shown.

From Power Shift to Occupy Wall Street, we are seeing the resurgence of a youth-driven movement that has the power, ambition, and creativity to take back our country from the forces of corporate greed. And if anything is clear, it’s that you are at the forefront of this movement, and this is only the beginning.

For us, there is no better example of what this movement is capable of than your victory in the fight against Keystone XL. Thanks to your work, President Obama delayed (and likely killed) the pipeline that, back in August, was considered a done deal.

BREAKING: Obama responds to grassroots, deals crippling blow to Keystone XL

Huge news: The Obama Administration just rejected TransCanada’s Keystone XL pipeline plan, putting the project on hold indefinitely while they study alternate routes.

This decision is a tremendous victory in the grassroots campaign against a pipeline that, until recently, was considered a done deal. The expected 12-18 month delay is a critical blow to the project, making it likely that the pipeline will be rejected or abandoned altogether.

Today’s decision is a major step in the right direction, and a true reason to celebrate — but let’s be clear: we can’t stop. The fight against Keystone XL isn’t over, and there are critical decisions on the horizon.

Perhaps the best news of the day is that we know how to win this fight. In this battle between people power and corporate dollars, people power is coming out on top.

People Power on the rise

UPDATE: We blew through the 50,000 hour goal within 10 minutes! New goal is 100,000 hours!

Yesterday 12,000 people completely surrounded the White House and demanded President Obama reject the Keystone XL pipeline.

The fight for a clean energy future is a fight between special interests and people power. What we saw yesterday was an incredible demonstration on the side of people power — and now we have to build on it.

"We Will Take This To The Top."

Last week, thirty-five of the best and brightest young leaders descended upon the nation’s capitol to deliver the grassroots demands and action that we’ve been organizing for months. From leading campaigns to move campuses beyond coal, to mobilizing against the Keystone XL pipeline, and hosting training and strategy sessions at our regional Power Shift conferences, these young people are leading in the grassroots, but last week they came to DC to be heard. And heard they were.

The first stop was a meeting with EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson to thank her for her leadership, and show our support for her continuing to lead on critical matters of the mercury ruling and the Keystone XL pipeline. In a packed room on Howard University’s campus, we had a frank discussion on the state of public health, and the challenges we face in protecting it. Tayla Tavor from Michigan shared how she was diagnosed with asthma when she was 3-years old, and now finds herself at Michigan State University fighting to retire the largest on-campus coal plant in the country, which continues to threaten her and her peers’ health.

Administrator Jackson shared our concerns about the impacts of dirty energy. "It's so important that your voices are heard, that campuses that are supposed to be teaching people aren't meanwhile polluting the surrounding community with mercury and costing the children a few IQ points because of the need to generate power. It's simply not fair," Jackson said. And she didn’t mince words about some of the challenges she faces in protecting the American people from big polluters. She slammed the GOP for putting the interests of the coal industry ahead of those of the American people.

In Ohio, Youth Activists Rally For a Cause, Not a Candidate

This weekend, over 400 youth leaders from across the Midwest converged in Cleveland, Ohio to do some political organizing. Ohio is a critical swing state in the 2012 election, but these activists weren't coming to knock on doors for Mitt Romney or phone-bank for Barack Obama.

Instead, their mission was two-fold: continue to work together building the clean energy economy in the heartland, and two, stand up against the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline, a major setback and threat for the Midwest.

Flood MSU With Calls of Support to Move Beyond Coal

Yesterday, seven Michigan State University students occupied MSU President Simon’s office to demand the university shut down it's coal plant and transition to 100% clean energy.

These students took a courageous stand to lead the call for 100% clean energy on our campuses and in our communities — and together we can help build this wave of demand.

They are calling on President Simon to commit to closing Michigan State’s T.B. Simon coal plant, the largest on-campus coal plant in the nation. It burns over 200,000 tons of dirty coal ever year and is a threat to students’ health.

Let's flood MSU President Simon's office with calls to demand Michigan State move beyond coal. Make a call and share this photo on Facebook to spread the word about their courageous action. If enough of us call, President Simon will see that these students have the support of people across the country.
