Energy Action Coalition, a coalition of 40 youth-led social and environmental justice organizations, named Russ Girling, CEO of TransCanada the top Fossil Fool for attempting to develop its Keystone XL pipeline.

Thousands of grassroots leaders voted in an online contest for Fossil Fools Day to decide the targets for nationwide actions launching this month to expose these corporate polluters.

“Russ Girling of TransCanada was voted the top Fossil Fool for his reckless and greedy attempts to develop the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline,” said Whit Jones, Campaign Director for Energy Action Coalition. “TransCanada’s Keystone XL pipeline is a boondoggle for the 1%; it would pipe toxic oil from Canada to the Gulf, where it would be exported to evade being taxed.”

In the coming weeks, Energy Action Coalition will take action to target TransCanada, and runner-ups Bank of America and Chesapeake Energy. These corporations were chosen because they evade taxes, receive massive subsidies and destroy communities with their pollution. Bank of America is the #1 financier of the U.S. coal industry and the #1 forecloser of American homes. Chesapeake Energy is the leading proponent of ‘fracking’ for natural gas, and has been accused of financing itself using junk bonds and shady financial practices.

This campaign comes amidst a major new effort to launch the movement into direct action against greedy corporation and the 1%. Energy Action Coalition has joined a broad coalition of labor, environmental and civil rights groups organizing the 99% Spring, an unprecedented effort to train 100,000 people in nonviolent direct action and organizing, from April 9-15.
