I’m from Scranton, Pennsylvania, a city under siege by fracking, so last week when I heard President Obama give a full throttled endorsement for natural gas, I winced. And based on the flurry of activity on Facebook and in blog posts, I know I wasn’t the only one alarmed.

Don’t get me wrong, President Obama’s commitments on climate, Keystone XL and reducing pollution from coal are a big step forward — but we cannot truly address the climate crisis and transition to a clean, just energy future by embracing false solutions. We need a U-turn on fracking, and it needs to start now.

Our pressure pushed President Obama to lead on climate and rethink Keystone XL, and now we must push back on fracking and make it clear that we demand a just transition away from ALL dirty energy to a clean energy economy.

In the coming weeks we’re going to ramp up our organizing to do just that, but for this to be successful we’re going to need a massive movement led effort.

This is the speech we have been fighting for. Today, President Obama stood up and laid out in bold detail his plan to address the greatest challenge of our generation. He announced that for the first time ever we will cap the carbon pollution spewing from power plants, took a defiant stance on Keystone XL, and even gave a shout out to divestment!

Today’s speech was a BIG deal for the climate, a major victory for our movement — and most of all, a HUGE testament to the work that YOU and other youth climate activists have been doing for years to push the President to lead the way on climate change.

This was a huge victory, but it is not an end to this fight, it’s a new beginning. We got this far because people like you have been pushing the President. And we will not get over the finish line unless we hold the President accountable to his commitments and continue pushing further.

We are the generation that occupied Wall Street, Sandy, and Tahrir Square. We dyed Facebook red in support of marriage equality. We’ve turned out in record numbers to every election we’ve been allowed to vote in, and elected President Barack Obama – twice.

We have shut down hundreds of coal plants and kept countless more from being built, while leading the charge to create a green economy in our communities. We have put our fists in the air and our bodies on the line to fight Keystone XL, fracking, and mountaintop removal — and we’re willing to do it again.

But we have much more work to do. As you read this, more wells are being fracked, sirens blare across Appalachia as coal companies blow the tops off mountains, and somewhere on Capitol Hill an industry lobbyist with fat pockets is selling out our future for quick profits.

This Fall at Power Shift 2013 we draw a line in the sand and say no more. Register now and join us!

From October 18th-21st, more than ten thousand youth leaders from every walk of life — college students, young environmental justice leaders, DREAMers, young people of faith, young workers — will come together in Pittsburgh, PA to train, build, and launch our resistance.
