Working Groups

Working groups create a space where coalition partners collaborate on strengthening the coalition and developing new programs. Our working groups meet regularly and are driven by the interests and passion of the coalition.

No Coal

The many coalition partners that make up the NO COAL working group are working together to put youth at the forefront of stopping the US coal rush. From cradle to grave, coal is a dirty, dangerous source of energy that we don't need and don't want. The No Coal working group is working to:
  1. Stop the development of new coal plants built and a phase out existing plants.
  2. End mountaintop removal and other destructive forms of mining
  3. Get Citi and Bank of America (the two biggest coal financers) to stop funding coal.
  4. Help create green job training programs guarantee a just transition for workers out of the fossil fuel industry and into clean energy jobs.
  5. Push the U.S to develop a 100% renewable and efficient energy infrastructure that meets our needs in safe, healthy and just ways.
  6. Get dirty energy money out of politics.

This group is developing programs to make sure that our elected representatives are listening to youth and creating bold clean energy policies. The groups two main projects are:
  • Adopt-a-Congressperson encourages youth to regularly engage their elected representatives on clean and just energy issues by writing letters, calling, rallying, and meeting in-person with their representatives. Contact ragini [at] energyaction.net for more information.
  • Power Shift '08 is an ambitious plan to support hundreds of young people in key districts this Fall to make 2008 a climate election. Contact maura [at] ssc.org to get involved with the political working group.

Green Jobs

We need to act boldly to fight climate change and transition America to a new clean energy economy that creates healthier, cleaner, more secure, and sustainable communities. In seizing this historic opportunity, not only can we confront the risks posed by climate change but we can create millions of good jobs across the nation and work to lift millions out of poverty. What we are working towards:
  • 5 million green jobs with pathways out of poverty
  • Creation of a Clean Energy Corps service program
  • Clean energy relevant curriculum in target campuses.
  • Local legislation to support energy efficiency and work force development training programs
  • Just transitions for communities that have been effected by coal usage and mining.
